Development prospects 

          Culverts in highway engineering are generally made of reinforced concrete. The use of steel corrugated culverts instead of reinforced concrete for culvert construction is a new technology in China. Steel corrugated culverts quickly replaced the reinforced concrete culverts in highway construction due to its stable performance, convenient installation, environmental protection, and low cost. The development prospects are very broad.

          In highway construction, the use of steel corrugated culvert instead of reinforced concrete for culvert construction has a history of more than 100 years. In 1896, the United States took the lead in conducting a feasibility study of corrugated culvert channels and culverts. Since then, steel corrugated culverts have been used for culvert construction in highway construction in the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries. In 1990, the Japanese expressway design and specifications formulated technical specifications for the design of corrugated pipe culverts.

          With the installation and use of corrugated pipe culverts all over the world, it has proved the versatility of this structure under various conditions. After my country's reform and opening up, Shenzhen and Datong coal mines began to import finished corrugated pipe culverts from abroad for culvert construction. Afterwards, Shanghai Highway Administration, Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute, and Shanghai Tongji University conducted dynamic and static load tests on metal bellows culverts. The results showed that they could meet the design and use requirements, fill the domestic gaps, and were quickly promoted and applied. The curtain wall has always been used in the construction of road facilities in various parts of our country. The steel corrugated culvert was put into the construction of Qinghai Highway. Three years of practice has proved that the steel corrugated culvert fully meets the culvert construction requirements of highway construction in the cold northern area.

          Practice has proved that the use of steel corrugated culvert instead of reinforced concrete for culvert construction has incomparable advantages in terms of construction period, construction cost, environmental protection, etc., and the use of steel corrugated culvert for culvert construction can greatly improve road traffic. The comfort and safety of the road, avoiding the phenomenon of "cross-jumping" of the culvert in the road, is conducive to solving the problem of damage to the concrete pipe culvert structure caused by cold and frost in the northwest.
